The ringmaker that takes bitcoin
Nelson’s most famous shop is a jewellery studio. Jens Hansen – The Ringmaker, at 320 Trafalgar Square, was chosen by Peter Jackson to make the One Ring for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. It is also, according to BTC Map, one of the few businesses in the Top of the South that accepts bitcoin — a volunteer last confirmed the listing in January 2026.
BTC Map is a crowd-sourced map built on OpenStreetMap, and we couldn’t find bitcoin mentioned on the studio’s own website, so treat it as a strong lead rather than a guarantee: ask before you choose a ring. If they do take it, expect to pay over the Lightning Network or on-chain from your own wallet; for a purchase of that size, on-chain is reasonable, and Lightning may have payment-size limits depending on your wallet.
It’s not the only listing. BTC Map also shows Granite Designworks on Venice Place in Nelson (last verified December 2023), and an hour and a half south-west, Tutaki Bakery Food Truck at 60 Fairfax Street, Murchison (verified February 2025) — a handy stop on the road to the West Coast or the Lewis Pass.
| Business | Town | Address on BTC Map | Last verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jens Hansen – The Ringmaker | Nelson | 320 Trafalgar Square | Jan 2026 |
| Granite Designworks | Nelson | 33 Venice Place | Dec 2023 |
| Tutaki Bakery Food Truck | Murchison | 60 Fairfax St | Feb 2025 |
Three listings across a region this size is small, but it’s more than Hamilton, Dunedin or Napier can show. Nelson’s economy leans on small makers, galleries and owner-operated hospitality — the kind of businesses that can decide on Monday to take bitcoin and be doing it by Friday. If that’s you, our guide to accepting crypto payments covers wallets, GST and the record-keeping IRD expects.
How paying a Nelson business in bitcoin actually works
If you’ve never paid for something in bitcoin, the process at a small shop is simpler than it sounds. The business shows a QR code — on a tablet at the counter or on a payment terminal — for the exact amount in NZD, converted to bitcoin at that moment. You scan it with your wallet app, check the amount, and confirm. Over Lightning the payment lands in a second or two; an on-chain payment might take ten minutes or more to confirm, and many shops will want to wait for that on a big-ticket item.
Two things trip people up. First, you need bitcoin already in a wallet you control — you can’t pay from an exchange account that only holds coins on your behalf unless it supports Lightning withdrawals. Second, spending bitcoin is a disposal for tax purposes: if the coins have gone up since you bought them, IRD may treat the gain as income. For a coffee it’s small change; for a custom wedding ring it may not be. Our wallet guide covers Lightning-capable wallets, and the tax guide explains disposals.
Where are the Bitcoin ATMs in Nelson?
Localcoin’s official locator lists two Nelson machines, though you’d be forgiven for missing one: the site files it under Canterbury. That misfiling is why some summaries — including the count on our own map and city card — still show a single Nelson machine. Both addresses below come straight from Localcoin’s individual ATM pages, checked on 15 October 2026.
Kiwi Convenience FoodStore and Vape Shop, 105 Trafalgar Street (Localcoin labels the suburb “Nelson East”). Listed as open 8am–9pm on weekdays and 8am–11pm at weekends — the later option of the two.
Haven Road Store and Haven Vape, 213 Haven Road, Beachville. On the main road between the city and the port. Listed hours run from 7am on weekdays (9am at weekends) to between 8pm and 9pm.
Both machines are buy-only, take NZ$5–100 notes, and need a scannable wallet QR code plus ID matched to a selfie. Localcoin’s FAQ sets purchases between NZ$5 and NZ$9,500 per transaction. We couldn’t confirm any CoinFlip machine in Nelson — its locator blocks automated checks — so if you’ve seen one, let us know. For the national picture on fees, ID and the law, see our Bitcoin ATM guide.
What about Blenheim, Motueka and the rest of the Top of the South?
We couldn’t find a crypto machine anywhere else in the Top of the South. Localcoin lists nothing in Marlborough, and searches turned up no CoinFlip site in Blenheim, Picton, Richmond, Motueka or Golden Bay. That makes Nelson’s two kiosks the only cash route for roughly the whole top of the island. From Blenheim, that’s about an hour and three-quarters each way; from Tākaka, around two hours over the hill.
For anyone in that position, driving to Nelson to pay a premium rarely makes sense. If you have a bank account, an online exchange or a card purchase gets you the same coins without the trip — see our guide to buying bitcoin for the NZD routes.
Ferry or Lewis Pass: the bigger clusters
If you’re travelling anyway, the nearest larger groups of machines are across Cook Strait or over the Alps. From Picton, the ferry lands in Wellington, where Localcoin lists sites in Mt Victoria, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua and Paraparaumu — see our Wellington page. Down the Lewis Pass, Christchurch has around ten Localcoin machines and more from CoinFlip.
When a trip to a machine makes sense
- You have cash and no bank account
- You’re already in Nelson or Wellington and want a small amount today
- You prefer the purchase not to appear on your bank statement
Why online usually wins in the Top of the South
- Fees around 16% versus about 1% by bank transfer online
- Hours of driving or a ferry fare on top
- You still need full ID — it isn’t anonymous
What does a Nelson ATM purchase cost?
Localcoin doesn’t print a fee percentage on its New Zealand site. A third-party Coin ATM Radar listing for one of its Christchurch machines shows NZ$4 plus 16.1%, and University of Otago researchers found fees of 6–19% across NZ machines. On NZ$400, that means roughly NZ$332 of bitcoin from the Trafalgar Street machine, against about NZ$396 through an exchange funded by bank transfer. Card purchases typically cost a few percent and land in between.
Neither machine buys crypto back. To turn coins into NZD, sell on an exchange and withdraw to your bank — our cash-out guide explains how and what records to keep for IRD.
Meetups in Nelson Tasman
Cryptocurrency NZ’s Nelson group on Meetup.com, with about 107 members, meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm at Rimu Wine Bar on the Māpua wharf — a pleasant 30-odd minutes from town. The next listed date when we checked was 28 October 2026, with sessions also listed for late November, December and January. September drew five people, which by regional standards is a decent crowd. Older listings mention The Sands bar on Rocks Road, so check the current page before you go.
For tax help, ask any chartered accountant you’re considering whether they already handle crypto; we don’t name local firms we haven’t been able to verify. The machines themselves are legal: a planned ban was dropped in July 2026, and a bill before Parliament would instead let ministers cap cash crypto purchases at a figure still to be set — our regulation guide tracks it.
