How many crypto ATMs does Christchurch have?
More than any other South Island city, and second only to Auckland nationally. Localcoin’s official locator files 11 machines under Canterbury. One of those is actually in Nelson and one is in Timaru, which leaves nine inside Christchurch. CoinFlip has a live Christchurch locations page, but it blocks automated access, so we can’t count its kiosks directly.
The bigger figure that circulates — about 40 machines in the Christchurch area — comes from a Coin ATM Radar search snippet. Coin ATM Radar was blocked to us too, so we can’t confirm that number or how many of those listings are out of date. A fair summary: nine confirmed, probably a couple of dozen in total.
Christchurch Bitcoin ATMs by suburb
Localcoin’s Christchurch hosts lean heavily towards service stations, which suits a city where most people drive. Here is the full list from the locator:
| Suburb | Host | Address | Type | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Central city | Urban Mart | 150 Hereford St | Buy | 7.30am–9.30pm wkdays |
| Papanui | BP2Go Papanui | 461 Papanui Rd | Buy & sell | 5.30am–11pm wkdays |
| St Albans | Hukka Vape Specialist | 1069 Colombo St | Buy | 10am–8pm wkdays |
| Bishopdale | Caltex Bishopdale | 318 Harewood Rd | Buy | 5.30am–11pm wkdays |
| Westburn | BP 2GO Westburn | 196 Waimairi Rd | Buy | 5.30am–9pm wkdays |
| Hornby | Gas Hornby | 45 Carmen Rd | Buy | 5am–11pm daily |
| Bromley | BP2GO Linwood | 457 Linwood Ave | Buy | 5am–10pm wkdays |
| Waltham | Challenge Opawa | 11 Opawa Rd | Buy | 6am–10pm daily |
| St Martins | Mobil St Martins | 238 Centaurus Rd | Buy | 6.30am–9pm daily |
The north-west is best served — Papanui, St Albans, Bishopdale and Westburn are all within a few minutes of each other — while the eastern suburbs beyond Linwood, New Brighton included, have no Localcoin machine. If you want to sell rather than buy, BP2Go Papanui is the only Localcoin site in the city flagged as paying out cash.
When are Christchurch’s crypto ATMs open?
Unlike Wellington or the Mount, Christchurch has no Localcoin machine listed as open 24/7 — every one sits inside a shop or forecourt that closes at night. The early starts are on the forecourts: Gas Hornby and BP2GO Linwood open at 5am, and Papanui, Bishopdale and Westburn at 5.30am on weekdays. For late visits, Papanui, Bishopdale (weekdays) and Hornby stay open until 11pm. The narrowest window is at the Hukka vape shop in St Albans, which opens at 10am and closes at 8pm on weekdays and 6pm on Sundays.
That matters most for sellers. Papanui is the only Localcoin machine in the South Island that pays out notes, and its forecourt hours — 5.30am to 11pm on weekdays, from 6am on Saturday and 6.30am on Sunday — are the hours in which you can cash out. Localcoin’s sell limits are NZ$50 to NZ$9,500 per transaction and NZ$20,000 a day. Our Wellington guide walks through how a Localcoin sale works, step by step.
MetroMart, Urban Mart and the third-party listings
Search around and you’ll see other Christchurch names. Coin ATM Radar has listed machines at MetroMart Bush Inn (installed March 2024), MetroMart Central Station at 654 Colombo Street and Harewood Superette, while a BP 2GO in Mairehau is marked as removed. None of these appears on Localcoin’s current locator, so they may belong to CoinFlip, may have moved, or may simply be stale. Phone ahead before making a special trip.
The same aggregator gives one of the few public fee figures for any NZ machine: Urban Mart’s Localcoin unit was listed at NZ$4 plus 16.1% on a bitcoin purchase. The listing is probably more than a year old and Localcoin doesn’t publish a percentage itself, but it lines up with other estimates in our national ATM guide. On NZ$200 that would leave you with about NZ$164 of bitcoin.
The billboard that was paid for in bitcoin
In August 2025 Localcoin paid Jolly Billboards entirely in bitcoin for a campaign on Jolly’s digital site at the corner of Main South Road and Springs Road in Wigram. The ad pointed passing drivers to a nearby BP hosting a Localcoin ATM. IT Brief reported it as one of the first New Zealand outdoor campaigns paid in crypto; Mad Daily went further and called it possibly a world first.
We’d treat the “world first” label as marketing — it is unverified, and a Hamilton billboard firm had already been reported accepting crypto. We also couldn’t match the advertised BP to a site on today’s locator: the closest Localcoin machine to Wigram is now Gas Hornby on Carmen Road.
Cryptopia: Christchurch’s crypto cautionary tale
For a few years Christchurch was home to one of the world’s busier altcoin exchanges. Cryptopia listed a long tail of small coins and had close to a million registered users. In January 2019 it was hacked, with losses reported at between NZ$16 million and NZ$30 million. Trading stopped, and in May 2019 the company went into liquidation with Grant Thornton appointed.
What followed made legal history. In 2020 the High Court ruled that cryptocurrency is property and that Cryptopia had held customers’ coins on trust — so they belonged to the account holders, not the company’s creditors. Liquidators then spent years rebuilding the exchange’s records. From December 2024 they returned bitcoin and dogecoin worth more than NZ$400 million to verified holders, and their June 2025 report put total distributions above NZ$450 million to about 12,600 people. Late claimants now risk receiving less, or nothing.
Spending bitcoin in Christchurch
Christchurch has 11 places on BTC Map — and, unusually, nine of them were re-verified by mappers in 2025, making it the most recently checked city in New Zealand. In the central city you’ll find Bánh Mì EM at 150 Lichfield Street, Airborn Paddling on Cambridge Terrace, Wheeler Motor Company on Moorhouse Avenue, Connect Chiropractic on Cashel Street, a hairdresser on Antigua Street and Workspace Studios on Ferry Road. Further out are Chimney Doctor in Cashmere, a second Connect Chiropractic on Ferry Road, MAPU Test Kitchen in Lyttelton, a Lincoln mushroom grower and Lilybrook Dairy in Rangiora.
BTC Map is crowd-sourced, so treat it as a lead rather than a guarantee. Business owners curious about joining the list can start with our guide to accepting crypto.
Meetups and local crypto businesses
Christchurch has two active groups, and they suit different people. The bitcoin-only Christchurch Bitcoin Meetup was set up on Meetup.com in February 2024 and lists about 59 members, though its organisers note that more people turn up than RSVP. It meets at 7pm on the first Wednesday of the month at Bar Yoku, 20 Welles Street, with dates already posted for 4 November and 2 December 2026 and 6 January 2027.
The general Christchurch Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Meetup, part of the Cryptocurrency NZ network, dates back to January 2018 and has about 1,070 members. It meets from 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month at Dux Central, 6 Poplar Street; recent evenings drew between seven and 14 RSVPs. If someone at either meetup offers to swap crypto for cash, read our P2P safety guide first.
The city also has a home-grown payments company. Pay It Now NZ Limited (FSP1002374) is registered in Christchurch and builds crypto payment tools for merchants. We know it mainly from its FSPR entry and third-party coverage, so we can’t vouch for its current fees or services. We haven’t vetted any Christchurch accountants who advertise crypto work either, so we don’t name them.
Crypto ATM crime in Christchurch
A crypto ATM is, physically, a box full of banknotes, and Christchurch has seen what that invites. In the early hours of a Saturday in May 2025, offenders reversed a vehicle into the front of a store on Main North Road in Redwood and tried to take its Bitcoin ATM. They failed, and Police asked anyone with information to come forward. Reports didn’t name the operator.
The practical lesson: use a machine during staffed hours, don’t count out bundles of notes on the footpath, and be wary of anyone offering to “help” at the screen.
Outside the city: Canterbury and the West Coast
Beyond Christchurch the machines thin out quickly. Localcoin’s only other Canterbury site is The Bottle-O at Washdyke, Timaru. Rangiora and Lincoln have a bitcoin-accepting business each but no machine, and we found nothing at all on the West Coast. Further south, Dunedin has a single machine and Queenstown none — though it has far more bitcoin merchants than Christchurch.
For a sense of distance, here are our rough estimates for an off-peak drive (not route-planner figures). Rolleston and Lincoln are 15–20 minutes from Gas Hornby; Kaiapoi and Rangiora 20–30 minutes from Papanui. Ashburton is about an hour from Hornby. Timaru’s machine at The Bottle-O Washdyke, on the Hilton Highway, is open 10am to 9pm daily and serves South Canterbury, about two hours south of Christchurch. From the West Coast, the nearest machine is a Christchurch one over Arthur’s Pass, three-plus hours away.
For anyone more than a short drive from Papanui or Hornby, buying online is simply more practical. A bank-transfer exchange typically costs around 1%, card purchases a few percent. Our buying guide covers both, and our cash-out guide covers the return trip.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy bitcoin with cash in Christchurch?
Localcoin has nine machines in the city, from Urban Mart at 150 Hereford Street in the centre to BP2GO stations in Linwood, Papanui and Westburn and the Caltex in Bishopdale. CoinFlip runs more, including a site BTC Map places near the city. Bring photo ID and a wallet QR code.
How many Bitcoin ATMs are in Christchurch?
At least nine Localcoin machines are confirmed on the operator’s locator. A Coin ATM Radar search snippet suggests about 40 machines across the wider area once CoinFlip and others are counted, but we could not open that site to confirm, so treat the higher figure as unverified.
Can I sell crypto for cash in Christchurch?
Localcoin flags the BP2Go at 461 Papanui Road as a two-way machine that pays out cash. The other Localcoin sites are buy-only. Selling on an exchange and withdrawing NZD to your bank is usually far cheaper.
What happened to Cryptopia?
Christchurch-based Cryptopia was hacked in January 2019 and went into liquidation that May, with Grant Thornton as liquidator. After a 2020 High Court ruling that customers’ coins were held on trust, liquidators began returning bitcoin and dogecoin worth more than NZ$400 million to verified account holders in December 2024.
Is there a bitcoin meetup in Christchurch?
Yes. The bitcoin-only Christchurch Bitcoin Meetup gathers at 7pm on the first Wednesday of the month at Bar Yoku, 20 Welles Street; the next listed date is 4 November 2026. The larger Cryptocurrency NZ group, about 1,070 members, meets on the last Wednesday at Dux Central.
Where can I spend bitcoin in Christchurch?
BTC Map lists 11 places in and around the city, including Bánh Mì EM on Lichfield Street, Airborn Paddling on Cambridge Terrace and Wheeler Motor Company on Moorhouse Avenue. Nine were re-verified by mappers since 2025, the freshest data of any NZ city.
Was a Christchurch billboard really paid for in bitcoin?
Yes. In August 2025 Localcoin paid Jolly Billboards in bitcoin for a digital billboard at Main South Road and Springs Road in Wigram, pointing drivers to a nearby BP with a Localcoin ATM. One trade site called it possibly a world first; that claim is unverified.
